Be Energy Efficient & Save on Gas and Electricity Bills |
| |
| |
What is the Energy Efficiency Commitment? |
|
| |
Gas and electricity companies that supply people's homes have, by law, to meet energy efficiency targets. This is part of the Government's Climate Change Programme because the best way to reduce carbon emissions is to cut the amount of electricity that is used. And improving energy efficiency is the cheapest way of reducing electricity consumption.
These targets will be met by consumers paying a little extra in their bills (it varies depending on how cheaply each supplier can meet its targets, but from April 2005 this is likely to be about £10 per fuel per year). The money is then used to pay for the installation of measures such as insulation, low-energy light bulbs and heating systems. Half of this money will help people on certain benefits or tax credits.
We recommend that you contact your supplier to find out what packages or grants
you may qualify for. For more information about grant schemes, please visit the Energy savings trust website, which has a grant-finder feature.
Be energy efficient:
By being energy efficient you could save up to £300 a year on your bills, as well as helping the environment. Here are some good examples of how to save.
Televisions, stereos, computers: To cut down on wasted energy avoid leaving appliances on standby.
Lightbulbs: If you use any light for four hours or more a day, replacing it with an energy saving equivalent will use a quarter of the electricity and last 12 times longer.
Energy saving light bulbs cost around £5 each, but will give you a saving of £10 over the year.
Boiler: Replacing a 15 year old model could save you over 20 percent on your fuel bills.
